Full Service Engineering

Quality, dependability, performance, and safety start with exceptional engineering, and our engineers are second to none in the industry. All products are built and tested to exceed expectations.

Engineering Capabilities

A customized approach to engineering solutions

GSS hires the most forward-thinking engineers in the business and gives them the most advanced tools available to ensure our product lineup is as relevant tomorrow as it is today. As part of our process, we build prototypes to ensure that our products work in the real world, not just on the computer. If a customer needs it, we can design and build it.

Engineering Solutions

  • Computer-aided design (CAD)
    • Creo
    • CATIA V4/V5
    • NX TeamCenter
  • Computer-aided engineering (CAE)
    • FEA – linear/non-linear
    • Kinematics for optimum steering geometry
    • Steering system design/modeling software

Real World Prototyping

Fast delivery of high-quality protypes is just one reason why GSS is a global leader in the development of intermediate shaft and column components. Our prototype methodology, which meshes design with manufacturing, uses representative production processes that account for typical variables, including materials and environment. The result is a prototype that accurately represents and performs like the final product.

Research & Development

The Future of GSS Engineering

We’re always looking for ways to advance technology. For example, our R&D engineering teams are using novel materials to create a new generation of steering shafts that weigh less, cost less, and offer advanced corrosion protection as well as higher stiffness, among other benefits.

To ensure that we remain on the leading edge of industry technology and trends, GSS is a regular presence at the prestigious China Automotive Steering Summit, EU Automotive Steering Systems Conference, and other global conferences. Here, we collaborate with Tier 1 systems suppliers to co-jointly develop and support customer-specific needs and broader applications. Attending these meetings also gives our team invaluable insights into new trends and capabilities, market needs, customer requirements, and industry expectations. We gather input from leading experts via real-world case studies, technical demonstrations, focused presentations, and panel/roundtable discussions. Attendees and leaders of these conferences solve some of the most daunting challenges in steering design, safety, and automated driving, such as:

  • Increasing efficiencies by improving weight, volume, and performance
  • Reducing cost and optimizing productivity, safety, and user comfort
  • Enhancing viability, reliability, and safety of steer-by-wire and associated backup strategies

Exceptional Customer Support

We understand that clear, consistent communication is vital throughout design and development. We assemble custom product development teams to liaison with the client and ensure that everything—from design, real-world prototyping to manufacturing—is handled according to project specs and customer expectations.

Engineering for Performance & Safety

Steering Column Research and Development

Before any of our safety-critical steering components leave our facility we test them in our own labs, using accelerated methods that simulate real life. This ensures that the design, materials, and tolerance of our products outperform expectations for the life of the vehicle. Here are some of the methods we use to ensure we meet our targets:

  • Advanced product quality planning (APQP)
  • Failure mode effects analysis (FMEA)
  • Finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Steering column R&D
  • Benchmarking
  • Real production line prototyping
  • Product testing
  • Materials analysis
